Celebrating Being a Woman

Celebrating Being a Woman

When you go about your week, do you ever stop and think about the fact that you are a woman and what that means in the grand scheme of things? I don’t! I’m thinking about packing a lunch, things on my to-do list and taking care of my puppy. That’s one reason why having a day to celebrate women and all we have achieved and are achieving in the world is so great.
This March 8th marks the 101st anniversary of International Women’s Day and the theme is “Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures,” with a focus on empowering and celebrating rural women.
To see how Canada will be celebrating, I scrolled through a list of events happening across the country throughout the month. Many communities will be hosting marches, networking events and inspiring speakers sharing their stories. A few activities I found, however, surprised me. Two events challenged women to either not wear makeup for 10 consecutive Mondays or to post a photo of themselves without makeup to their social networking sites, all to boost confidence. Another event was a walk-a-thon, to walk a mile in an elderly lady’s shoes. Finally, I came across The Change Makers Project, to choose and celebrate a woman who has made a difference by portraying her through photography, artwork or some form of media.
All these events not only made me excited for International Women’s Day, but gave me ideas for how I wanted to celebrate: They were a reminder to me to celebrate the essentials of me as a woman; to appreciate the situations other women in all stages of life and all over the world face and to learn more about the strong and inspiring women who are changing the world.
