Properly Storing your Cutting Boards

Properly Storing your Cutting Boards

When setting up for a warehouse, there are a few things that you have to keep in mind if those items you have are made of hardwood. Here at Bulk Cutting Boards, we deal with hardwood products year-round. We’ve had the time to perfect our storing facilities and want to share our expertise with you! If you’re thinking about starting a business involving hardwood, you might want to take note of these important factors.

Temperature

When dealing with a product that is made from hardwood, it is important that the temperature remains between 15°C and 25°C (60°F and 80°F). Once the wood is dry, a sudden change in temperature could cause the board to warp and extreme shifts in temperature may cause the wood to contract and then expand, leading to cracks and fissures. This will ultimately eat away at your inventory or, even worse, damage all of it.

Keeping the warehouse warm in colder climates—even overnight—must be a priority and keeping the shop cooler in the summer, though it will be much less of a problem than in the winter, will help maintain the integrity of the wood. Have heaters spaced throughout the warehouse and running at all times. Keep track of the warehouse temperature daily to notice any sudden changes in that regard.

Humidity

Much like the temperature factor when storing hardwood products, the humidity levels will also come into play. The ideal humidity level you want is around 40%. Anything too high will make your wood damp, possibly leading to mold or other unwanted damage, and anything too will slowly warp even the thickest of your wood products.

Have a humidity meter in your warehouse to get an idea of where you are at. If you’re dealing with low humidity, you will have to buy humidifiers to correct and stabilize your warehouse’s humidity levels. If too much humidity, then a dehumidifier will be needed.

Stacking, Packing and Storing

We keep our high-quality cutting boards in stacks to ensure straightness, but also for organization and space management. Be sure to place the stacks on top of a pallet to keep them off the ground, avoiding unnecessary humidity and/or damage from possible spills.

If you have best-sellers that fly off the shelves, it would be favourable to have around one hundred always packed up and ready to go so that during busy times you don’t fall behind. You can do this on quiet days—see it as getting ahead of the game!

One last thing, if you are storing softer kinds of wood like cedar and hemlock, you should treat them immediately with bee’s wax and mineral oil, as this will help minimize curvature and wood splitting.
