Moderation: The Key To Success For Busy Moms

Moderation: The Key To Success For Busy Moms

In our fast-paced, modern lives we are often looking for a quick fix, not to mention the “next best thing”. Whether we are talking about diet, exercise or a healthy lifestyle, our goals may often appear overwhelming and unreachable. Just like any daunting task, it’s much easier to break things down into smaller, more doable tasks. After all, anything too extreme is doomed to fail. You know what they say, “slow and steady wins the race”!

So here’s a novel idea… why not live in moderation? And I mean in all aspects – imagine, eating what you want, exercising, drinking, partying, working, hobbies… everything in moderation. This means never denying yourself what you really want and need, but also not over-indulging in anything either. Moderation, however, can only work if you can also find balance.

For the working woman and the busy mom, life is about balance. But what is “balance” really? The definition of “strike a balance” according to the Concise Oxford Dictionary is to “choose a moderate course or compromise”. This means that there must be give and take to maintain some type of equilibrium.

The question remains, how do you find balance and live in moderation? If the answer was really simple, then it would be easy to do! Given the number of working women and busy moms who are always juggling life’s priorities, it’s definitely easier said than done. So here are some tips:

1. Diet – why not try a little bit of this and a little bit of that? We all know what a healthy diet consists of, but we often don’t do it. How about trying to eat mostly healthy and balanced but also allowing yourself a few treats too. Make this a lifestyle and not a diet. Sometimes when we change our focus from trying to lose weight, good things follow.

2. Exercise – why not do a little bit here and a little bit there? Find activities that you enjoy if going to the gym is a chore. Every little bit not only adds up, but it counts too!

3. Life & Hobbies – make a list of the things you need to do and those you want to do. Make sure you really do have to do all those on the “need to do” side – eliminate any you can or do them less often, and make sure some that you “want to do” make the list in day-to-day life.

At the end of the day, we must remember that in life we are on a journey. It’s not all about the destination – if you don’t enjoy getting there, what’s the point?
