Tips for a Great Mother’s Day

Tips for a Great Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day this year is coming up soon on Sunday, May 14. Not sure what to get Mom? Maybe you want a creative way to celebrate the Mother in your life. There are many great gifts to give, like pearl jewelry, chocolate, engraved cutting board and flowers. But don’t think that this day is only for your birth Mother! With so many single parent families, and so many significant people who played a part in your life through the years, maybe Mother’s Day is more a celebration of someone who stood in where a natural Mom could not.

Whomever you are thinking of this Mother’s day; we have some tips for choosing great gifts, ways to celebrate, and cool ideas for Mom’s of any sort.

You know your Mom. You most likely have a pretty good idea of what she is interested in and what she’s not. Think about who she is, and what she enjoys. If you’re looking for a gift, find creative ways to give her something she may not buy for herself. A set of pretty pearls, a gift card to her favorite cafe or clothing store, or maybe something practical for the house.

Say “I love you” all year long. What about a gift subscription to her favorite gardening magazine. Or a subscription to a wine club, or chocolate club? Some of these will deliver an item of choice each month, for an ongoing treat.

Lose the expectations. Drop any expectations of how you want Mom to react or receive your gift or celebration. Obviously, if this doesn’t happen it leaves you feeling disappointed and instead of honouring Mom, it becomes easy to leave the scene feeling flat.

Home-spun memorabilia. If you have great memories of times together with Mom, make her a scrapbook or shadowbox containing items, photos, and notes about these memories. Custom made calendars, coffee mugs; or picture puzzles (made from your photos) are other things that can be a really fun gift.

Does your Mom do social media? If she does, try posting something nice about her every hour throughout Mother’s Day. Change your cover picture to one of you and Mom, or post some old photos on her wall.

If a party is more what you have in mind, do a bit of research and find out what is available in your area. There are many amazing restaurants and cafes that will cater private parties. Keep in mind again, who your Mother is, and what would be special to her. Take her somewhere unexpected! Often times it is the simpler things that really make someone’s day.

On a small budget? Invite Mom over to your house, or go to hers and “cater” a dinner or lunch feast in her honor. Top it off with some pretty flowers, a special little gift, and her favorite friends for a sure-fire hit!
