Fun, free (almost) activities for you and the kids this summer

Ah, the scent of freshly cut grass, the taste of summer berries, ripe from the bush and the sound of the kids yelling: “Mom, we’re bored.” Yes, summer’s here.

With school out for the longest stretch of the calendar year, keeping the kids entertained can be a chore—especially if you don’t want to end up running an overdraft to pay for all those expensive activities that are all over the TV and radio.

Don’t panic. There’s plenty of fun activities you can do with the kids this summer that will cost you next to nothing.

Organize a scavenger hunt
Scavenger hunts are a great way to keep the kids entertained, and if you’re outside they can be great exercise, too. Scavenger hunts for kids (link below) is a great website that’s full of ideas and resources to help you put together a great hunt for your brood (and the neighborhood kids) this summer.

Enjoy a Picnic
Load up the car with food, pack up the kids and sunscreen and head to the nearest beach, river or green space for a picnic. Food always tastes better outdoors, and you can enjoy being closer to nature and teach the kids about the World around them in an informal, fun atmosphere. Healthy-picnics (link below) has tons of picnic theme ideas and healthy recipes for you to prepare the perfect picnic. All you need to do now is pick the day!

Fall in love with the park again
We go through phases with our local parks. Remember when our kids were first old enough to ride the swings or climb the jungle gym? We were there every day! But then it became boring, and now the park is just a place we drive by on the way to some expensive alternative. If it’s been a while, head back to your local park with the kids. You’ll be amazed at how much fun they have. It’s like finding a long-lost toy they haven’t played with in ages.

Let your inner artist out—on the driveway
For less than $10 you can pick up a set of crayons and spend a great afternoon drawing on the driveway. The asphalt on your driveway is the perfect canvas for the kids to get creative on. Remember hopscotch? Ask the kids to draw the game and get them moving from their own creation. Visit the Crayola store online (link below) for information on the right crayons to buy (look for crayons that are non-toxic and will wash away in the rain).
